1955-56: New Zealand Inaugural Tour to India 

New Zealand visited India for the first time to play 5 test matches in 1955-56. The series was won by the Indian team 2-0 and 3 matches were drawn. This became the foundation of the New Zealand vs Indian team rivalry.

1967 – 68: First series played by India in New Zealand

India visited New Zealand for the first time to play 4 test matches in 1967-68. The winning team was India 3-1. It was the first test match won by India outside the subcontinent.  

1975: First ODI between both the teams

The first ODI was played between the New Zealand and India cricket team in the 1975 cricket world cup held in England. New Zealand won the match and depicted its growing competitiveness in ODI. 

1988-89 – New Zealand visited India

New Zealand visited India for 3 tests and 5 ODI matches. India was the winner in test series 2-1 and ODI series 4-0. One match was abandoned. Kris Srikanth played amazingly and scored 240 runs in test series. Another epic performance was given by Mohammad Azharuddin by scoring 205 runs in ODI. 

1995-96

In the 1995-96 season, New Zealand visited India for 3 tests and 6 ODIs. Again India was the winner in both formats with 1-0 in the Test series and 3-2 in ODIs. This was the tour when the tragic incident happened during 5th ODI where the stand collapsed, killing 9 people. 

2000: ICC Champions Trophy Final Match

The 2000 ICC Champions Trophy final match was played between New Zealand in India. New Zealand won the trophy marking it as the first ICC tournament victory by New Zealand. 

 2017-18: Limited over series 

During the end of 2017, New Zealand visited India for a limited-overs series (3 ODIs and 3 T20Is). Both the series were won by the Indian cricket team, ODIs and T20Is by 2-1. The player of the series in the ODI was Virat Kohli for scoring 263 runs. 

2021: ICC World Test Championship Final Match 

Inaugural ICC world test Championship final match was played between India and New Zealand held at Rose Bowl in Southampton. The championship was held in June 2021. New Zealand won the championship by 8 wickets. Kyle Jamieson was declared as the player of the match for taking 7 wickets. 

2024: New Zealand’s victory in the Test series in India 

New Zealand won the test series 3-0 against India in October 2024. The series was held in India and it was the first series won by New Zealand in India. The major role in the victory was played by spin bowler Mitchell Santner by taking 13 wickets and scoring 157 runs. 

2025: ICC Champions Trophy Final Match 

In the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy, the final match was played between India and New Zealand on 9th March at Dubai International Cricket Stadium. India outrun New Zealand’s score of 251/7 by scoring 254-6 to win by 4 wickets. The player of the match was Rohit Sharma scoring 76 runs off 83 balls.
